I just read Kathryn Hulme's Gurdjieff recollection - "The Undiscovered Country: A Spiritual Adventure" where she tells about her life and search and among other things, describes the last meeting with Gurdjieff in 1949. She said that after having a little bit too much to drink she had started telling a story about a 4-year old who crossed the Atlantic all by herself...

I accidentally found the actual voice recording of her telling that story and Gurdjieff's reaction on the Web - i did not even know that any recordings of Gurdjieff's voice existed..Check out the transcript - sometimes it is very difficult to understand Gurdjieff who often adds French and Russian words..

Krokodeel or Crocodile is the name that Gurdjieff gave to her "inner animal". This lesson really struck me - how often i identify with my emotions - no matter how noble and beautiful they look on the surface - it is my own little "Krokodeel" or "Hamster" coming out to feed...

I felt compassion from Gurdjieff but not from everybody else mocking her. I believe it was part of his game to be ruthless on the surface and compassionate inside.

where does compassion fit into this whole thing?
